Vinyl decking or wood decking.What material to use? Vinyl has some
advantages and disadvantages.Vinyl,when it first came out,it really looked nice and seemed to have real benefits,but it has been around now long enough to not stand the elements of time! Wood decking also has it problems but I believe it is over all far more superior.
Here are some differences between the two types of materials;
Maintenance
Vinyl Decks need to be cleaned with harsh cleaning products to get rid of the molds
that grow into the scratches and wear marks.These chemicals are acidic and in up in
your yard.Cleaning these Decks require a lot of hard scrubbing!
Wood Decks will need to be cleaned once in awhile to,but cleaning is a lot less labor
intensive if you keep your Deck resealed every few years and oiled once a year.When
cleaning with a water hose the dirt will easily roll off.
Sustainability
Although Vinyl Decks are made to look like real wood,they are not,and for this reason
they fade over time.Most are made with a composite of wood chips or pulp in the core.
Other solid Vinyl or Plastic Decks are made with a wood grain to mimic real wood but imagine trying to sand or refinish this material after a few years of use.
Wood Decks are basically the opposite of vinyl as far as being able to refinish the material.Wood can easily be sanded over and over again.If sealed and oiled properly it will
out live vinyl twice as long.
